Dear Poem+ friend, Welcome to April, a month when bowling alleys everywhere are open, just like they are every other month. I recently went bowling on a Friday night and the alley was so packed that my group got waitlisted before a lane opened for us. If somebody would have shown me bowling 100 years ago and asked me to predict how it would grow in popularity, let’s just say I would not have invested any money. And how wrong I would have been! According to Wikipedia, bowling is played by 120 million people worldwide. Not too shabby, bowling. The world is flooded with books about business strategies and leadership styles, but I’ve yet to see ‘Marketing Lessons From Bowling’ hit the shelves. It deserves to be a best seller, no doubt! Or maybe marketing has nothing to do with it and it’s nothing more than the beauty of bowling that brings people through the door. The best part is, most people are absolutely terrible at bowling, including myself. But of course, it’s not the bowling that matters, it’s the sitting around in those swivel chairs while wearing slippery shoes and laughing about our weeks. It’s the high fives, the hoots and hollers, the clinking of cold glasses, the getting out of our houses. And maybe what it is most of all, is that with bowling, even the worst of players can get a strike every once in a while. This means that everybody gets the chance to spin around in joy, pump their fist in the air and briefly taste the feeling of being absolutely perfect at something. As if the swivel chairs weren’t already perfection enough. You’ve really outdone yourself, bowling.
